Registry is known for marking registered domains as premium before renewal.

They did the same with .SBS & .CFD GTLDs. Bob Hawkes @Bob Hawkes posted about it here
alert - Turn Off Auto-Renew on .SBS and .CFD To Avoid Unexpected Bill

GTLDs owned by them
  • .bond
  • .cfd
  • .cyou
  • .icu
  • .sbs

IIRC, every registry of the 'new TLDs' can increase the renewal price and/or assign any domain as a 'premium', which is what makes all 'new TLDs' riskier (from a renewal price POV) than classic TLDs. I am surprised when domainers (that invest in new TLDs) don't realize this.

Can you imagine if CIRA all of a sudden introduced a similar concept?

IIRC there is a requirement for advance notice to be provided (to the registrar) and the client should normally have to renew the domain for the old price for up to 10 years before the increase takes effect.
