Over the past couple of weeks we have been modifying the way the New Posts are displayed.
Instead of "New Posts" we now have a custom feature called "Active Posts".

1. The previous way it would show only new posts and once read if you revisited New Posts the post you just read disappeared.
2. Also if you read all posts or marked them all as read you got a blank screen directing you to Active Posts instead.
3. Now you get both new and active posts on one screen with New Posts clearly marked as UNREAD until you click on them.
4. No worries the newest posts will move to the top so no need for lots of scrolling.

This was done to improve the experience on small mobile screens and to show all activity from the last 30 days.

So no need to hunt around, once clicked the Active Posts will show all New Post Activity from the last 30 days on one screen in chronological order.

Lots of other small updates are in progress so you will see some other changes across the board, if you have any comments about them please post here.

I have no idea how anyone would ever figure that out on their own. I see "Manage Topics" as a header and I naturally think it manages your topics for you, whatever the hell that is. Very unintuitive.

"Active Topics" as a primary header on the top menu is far better. I do see it's above the right column, but I stand by my conviction that "New Posts" (or whatever you want to call them) are the lifeblood of any forum and what the majority of regular participants are looking for.

It really should have its own list on the right column.

It is done for a reason...

New members will post and then click New Posts and not find their post because at that point it was read. Then they post the same thing again and I had to go in and delete it and explain they have to hit active topics to see their post or check inside the category.

Now all active posts display and new is always near the top but you can go back at any time and see what you have posted without the topic disappearing because is no longer categorized as unread.

I know it's a convoluted explanation but new members don't understand everything the way established members do.

The industry is changing to the Active Topics default, check out DNForum.com and AcornDomains plus a lot of them here.
The thing you will notice is they use active as default totally bypassing the main index page.

At least ours gives you a choice and all you have is one extra click.

As long as I can simply bookmark a page that is the equivalent of the old "new posts" functionality, that's all I care about. One click.

You can, I have implemented that but you have to do it this way...

Bookmark a search: Active Topics

Now understand with the new software that search number will always update and if you bookmark an old search number you will get an OLD search.

So go ahead and bookmark but then go in and change the address of the bookmark to: dn.ca/new

If you bookmark that it will look for a new search and automatically update.

So there have been some core updates to the software URL structure, if you follow my directions you can get exactly what rlm @rlm is asking for.

I can understand that. Personally I would have chose a different route to fix that issue (when an article is submitted or edited, simply flag it as unread for that user at the same time). But if that's the path the software is pushing, then it is what it is. But as long as it can be bookmarked to that unread only functionality, then that works for the regulars. I would presume that all of the regulars have a bookmark to that new/unread posts page like I do.

The software does not do that and it would not fix the fact that new members were hitting New Posts trying to find the article they just posted but it would not display because it was considered read.

So yes, its a bugger when things change but I have implemented the best fix I am able to do to keep everyone happy.
