TrumpSupporter.com makes a valid point about expiring domains (2.Viewing)

I thought this warranted it's own topic

How is it even allowed for registrars to auction off EXPIRING names? Why does icann even allow that. It creates a monopoly for businesses like dynadot.

The whole expired auction system is suspect. Is there collusion between most of these expired auction sites?

It’s been decades and this system hasn’t even been reviewed for fairness. IMO only the back order system should be allowed.

Have you given any thought of creating your own registrar business where you control outcomes?

When you think about it, GoDaddy is literally handed millions of dollars for doing their job registering domains, what entitles any entity to profit from dropping domains.

What about charity, infrastructure improvements etc?

It's a never ending tap that continues to flow even in drought. It's a good time to be a .com registrar

I feel like this is a reach. Registrars are a business. If they can't make money from the renewal, they'll try to make something from the expiry.

Furthermore, registrars have been auctioning off expired domain names for decades. It's a baked-in perk to registrars. I'd rather see this continue to happen then have it taken away and then they just jack up renewal rates to make up for it.

What I don't necessarily agree with is their ability to auction off domains BEFORE they drop and keep the revenue. I think the domain should drop and give all registrars a chance to register it.

Exactly, there has to be a fairer way of doing it than the current system.
