Clever.ca - same bidder that placed starting bid won the domain, they get 50% off?

I'm getting a headache 🤕

Just my opinion but I think Grape lost out with this overly complex auction system. I was quite prepared with a 15k max bid on nn.ca. The only reason I did not bid is I saw a 10k opening which gave me some doubts because I did not know where it was coming from. So in the end I decided not to bid at all

With a $34,501 close they are paying $82 for each of the 418 linking websites or $19 for each backlink.

There is money in gambling 😜

Someone knows something I don’t…. 😂😂😂 and for the record I don’t wanna know cause this whole TBR is out of control 🥵

Thank's for the explanation but thats way too complex for me, I had a 15k max bid in mind and was not aware of the above. I just saw the 10k opening and wasn't comfortable not knowing how the number got there before the bids started.
Just to clarify, TBR pre-ordering at Grape requires selecting a bid from 10 predefined amounts. Since a pre-order of $10,000 was received, the opening bid was set at $10,100.

It’s not as complicated as it may seem. For many years we ran a closed auction where only users with pre-orders could participate in an auction but because now we run an open auction, we incentivize pre-ordering to compensate users for their time and commitment. The compensation is a minimum of 50% of the pre-order bid — in this case, $5,000.

The rules are explained here

Yeah I get that now...

All that said, I am usually a last minute kind of guy and have been known to put in the larger end bids.

I can't do that at grape anymore though.

The casino affiliate space is massive. Most are offering lifetime 30-60% revenue split deals. iGaming Ontario reported the average player spent around $300 per month in 2025. Convert just one player per week at a 50% split and you're looking at a cool $93,600. Obviously, take these numbers with a chunk of salt.

No, there was a bid. It sold for $10,200.

There were 2 bids, $10,100 and $10,200 (starting was $10,000) so it's more than likely the original bidder, so he got it for $5,200. Now way someone who is willing to pay $5K for an LL.ca, and then balks when someone else bids $100 more.

In for a dime, in for a dollar.

Grape doesn't show who made the initial high pre-order bid, but I would imagine the winners all have some sort of pre-order discount at Grape.

For example, the winner could have placed a $800 pre-order and therefore gets $400 in discount. Although with a 20% total auction discount, the amount is higher at $620.

I would say it was $10,200 but let's wait for the confirmation from ms23 @ms23

I’m sorry, but pre-orders are private, and we cannot confirm one way or the other due to the winner’s privacy rights.

From the TBR info page:

"This structure allows the Stage 2 auction to open at the full Stage 1 bid amount (plus applicable increment) which sets a higher auction entry point for non stage 1 participants."

Does that mean "nn.ca" actually went for $5K?
