With Frank’s blessing, we wanted to share a small experiment we’re trying at CanSpace.

Every week we glance through the TBR list, and like many of you, we come across names that are at least worth a second look. Not necessarily only premium domains, but things that could make sense for a Canadian business, a development idea, a brandable project, or just something interesting from an investment perspective.

So we decided to start publishing a simple curated list called TBR Drop Radar. The goal isn’t to claim these are the “best” domains in the drop. It’s just a practical attempt to reduce the noise a bit and surface names that might be useful to someone.

Right now it’s just a blog post. We realize that’s not the most convenient format for something like this. If the idea sticks and people find it useful, we’d likely move it to a dedicated static page that stays at a fixed URL and gets updated throughout the week as we review the list.

Since DN is really the main place where .CA investors and entrepreneurs gather, we figured it would be the right place to ask: is this something you’d find useful if we kept doing it weekly?

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Everything will probably fall into one of two general thought processes:

1) "Yes please - highlight domains I might want to bid on, I don't have time to do the research myself because domaining is just a side gig"

2) "No thanks - I'm a serious domain investor and I will have to do my own thorough analysis on the TBR list regardless of any published "hot picks" or "drop radar" because I simply can't trust that you won't miss something that I'm interested in. And as such, I don't appreciate you making it easy for the lazy people."

We've been through this before with WHC. They initially were reporting domains that were attracting the most pre-TBR interest and people were furious about that. So they stopped showing customer interest and started their own curated "hot picks" or whatever they call it. I never bother looking at those lists for the reasons stated in answer 2. WHC continues to publish it, but I think most people don't find it all too interesting. Mostly we poke fun at some of the stuff that makes it into their hot picks list.

That being said, I certainly understand the thought process of why you might want to do that. Just from my perspective, its useless to me.

Personally I like all the tools I can get, I used to catch the odd domain at Canspace but got caught up in Sybername because they were the biggest game in town.

I also remember comparing the diamond list from catch drop to the hot picks from WHC. I liked having two lists because it gave me a second opinion on names and although I see @rlm's point I think some of the newer domainers need all the guidance they can get.

RLM reminds me of a lone cowboy out on the plains whereas I prefer being a guide that helps the new settlers find lush new grazing grounds. Having a couple of maps, or trails, to follow can only be advantageous so I'm all for it.

In the end the more domainers that buy domains the more valuable the remaining inventory becomes. Together maybe we can educate the end users about the value of a great .ca.
