Here's the quick version of an announcement you will see in the coming week. This is already live on our site, and in BETA, some changes will be made over the next few days.
  1. Backorders will be called auctions.
  2. TBR auctions at WHC will now last 7 days. Auctions end on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. ET and will still be extended in the last 3 minutes.
  3. Pre-drop bids are now $18, no longer increase automatically and are no longer visible.
  4. Anyone can join auctions for domains we could register during the drop (with more than two bidders).
  5. Bidding is only available in the New Client Area - clients will be redirected from the Old Client Area.

It had to happen, how many times there was a late drop and I did not notice it and was therefore excluded from bidding.

Even though I was not a bidder on basic.ca it is exactly the situation I was talking about. One goes through the initial offerings but something drops late and if you don't check a few times you lose out.

Personally I have always been in favour of open bids (as long as you have a verified account) and it will make it super convenient for me to go in at auction end to see if anything is still low enough for me to bid higher on.

All auctions will make more money with open bids and in the end I think it will drive up the value of .ca's in general.

This sounds like a well-thought-out compromise between potentially ruining the ability to bid at WHC (i.e. putting 100% of the domains won to open auction - see ya!) by providing customers with the "more than 2 bids" + "bids are now hidden" points in their favour.

That means any premium will be at open auction for 7 days, but it also means I'll be placing more mid-range domain bids at WHC due to every lazyass Tom, Dick and Harry no longer being able to just grease their bids off my hard work.

I'll still have to fight against RLM, but them's the breaks. It also introduces additional strategy - what if me and RLM are bidding, then what about Eby? Yeah, what about Eby?

We'll have to see how it goes, but initially it looks like a nice blend of give and take.

WHC gets all the premiums for 7-day open auction, but buyers also get a few bones tossed their way concerning the low to mid-range domains.

Question: Now that they're all min bids with no bid progression are we able to cancel "bids" if we made a mistake like we can at other registrars that use a similar format (CD, BM, etc.)?

This is currently still only possible through our support. We'll consider that in the future.

It looks like the default sort option still displays the TBR domains by "number of bids"?

Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

IMO the domains at the top of the default sort should be your Hot List domains, not a fully sorted bid list, regardless of whether the exact number of bids is (cough) "hidden".
