Who cares. I’m not suggesting you can’t do it. I’m saying there is no need for it. Especially when we’re talking about a DOMAIN. No sales are lost when it’s my domain and I can choose how to deal with transaction. If you don’t like it you can find another domain. I don’t need to hear your voice to close a deal and I also don’t need to go see you in person to close a deal. You can buy cars now online too ? Don’t blow your mind… mr. Know it all.

Many of my transactions are via emaiI alone. But I find many larger amount sales are easier to conclude with an in person phone call. At times they are people unsure of transferring procedures or that sort of thing. I find it much easier to explain it in person than all the back and forth with email and sometimes it makes them feel better to talk to you. No worries on my part and on a couple of occasions has led to them having someone call me looking for a domain.
I guess it all depends on your personal comfort level

Nope, never had that happen where they want to schedule a meeting before even asking what the price was. I do get the ones that try and call my landline, but I never answer that, its a dedicated line for whois and that's it. They can leave a message and I'll get back to them. If at all possible, I never have an initial discussion on the phone, only through email. After that, then I don't mind talking on the phone or text or whatever.

The ones I hate the most are when they leave a voicemail saying to call them back but don't refer to the domain name they want. If I don't have any other choice but to return their call, I will, but I will never give them a price on the spot. I just tell them that with a large portfolio of domain names, I need time to do a proper market analysis on the domain in question before discussing any price.

I'm not trying to make fun of you or anything like that, more just trying to get you to not take it all too seriously for your own sake. None of its personal - its just business and we all have some laughable interactions with naive or obnoxious people. But I do agree its an annoyance. This one was definitely a bit ridiculous with the insistence of booking a meeting over chump change. That, you have to admit, is pretty funny, like this guy thought he was brokering some high stakes deal and it was only $300.

In any case, I'm slowly pricing more and more domains with a BIN and leaving it at that. That takes some of the frustration out of it. Buy it - or don't. I don't care. Unfortunately, the Escrow.com landers at Bodis initiate a LOT of bogus transactions that never follow through. Escrow.com needs to really start to verify that buyers are legit before they bug me with new transaction notifications.

You've never ever had a phone meeting with a potential corporate buyer in your entire life? Based on your "I only sell for $15K or higher" statements I find that impossible to believe, because at a certain price level, most corporations want to talk over financial stuff (escrow, payment types, timing), or potential agreements and contracts, get IT involved with transfers and site changes, etc.

These guys are not going to just "toss you $20K and hope for the best". That's not how they got to be in charge of a business.

I have been part of 3 conference calls for sales in the last year and all have resulted in significant sales, and the last one involved me talking to a high-up executive about pricing and escrow, and then being turned over to IT to go through the actual transfer details and timing. The last IT guy couldn't stop talking about the price and "how he'd never pay that much" - that's why you're not running the company buddy.

I rarely ever talk on the phone. I mean its very rare. I normally have no problem communicating everything by email. The only time I do talk on the phone is when its a fellow domainer and I call just to shoot-the-crap. Anyone who's concerned about the security of the transaction is handled through Escrow.com and that pretty much solves it immediately. If I have a good sale about to close, I'll often give them my cell number and tell them to call if there are any questions or if they want to just ensure I'm a real person. They never call though.

Unfortunately the blank page scenario at Bodis is back. When I visit your domains at Bodis I get a blank page with my ad blocker on. When I disengage my ad blocker I see your Bodis for sale page. I thought they had that fixed but I have noticed its back on almost all the Bodis landers I visit.

A lot of the details about concluding a transaction are redundant. I just cut and paste previous emails that explain everything. This way they get a written record of the details, they can forward it to other people in the organization, whether it be the boss or the IT guy. I think that is much more efficient.

I am more than happy to chat on the phone, its just hardly ever necessary, and even when I offer it, they don't call.

Yes, some rare six-figure sales have resulted in phone calls. CreditCards took years and a few phone calls. But 99.9% of interactions I do are through email and email alone.

But yes, we all have our own methods that work best for each of us. I just know that I'm moving more away from the time-consuming interactions - I've got better things to do.

Just out of curiosity, how many people here use adblockers? Ads are annoying, but easy to ignore. I've never even considered using an adblocker.

Once you go adfree you cannot go back, in my house every device including phones have ad blockers installed. I also have ad blocking dns on my routers at home. I cannot remember seeing an ad ever.

I noticed that hard.ca was initially registered under CIRA (Hold). Does that mean it's one of the previously unavailable domain names that CIRA releases to the public on a trickle basis?

No, I do not believe that is the case. A few years ago a registrar was shut down and I think what happens is that CIRA moves all the domains into a sort of temporary holding registrar they control. They then ask the domain owners to transfer the domains to their preferred registrar - explaining that their old registrar had their license revoked for non compliance of something or other. Some domain owners didn't move those domains - and when they expire, you'll see that "CIRA Holding (5)" listed as the registrar.

Why didn't the registrants move the domains? I'd chalk it up to indifference about that domain, ineptitude or most likely, a bad registrant & admin email address - so they had no way to get the instructions & auth codes to move them out. I would assume that some may have eventually contacted CIRA directly to fix the mess, I suppose that's what I would have done.

This is all pure speculation on my part, but it aligned with the events at the time (registrar losing its license). Maybe @richard.schreier could confirm or clarify my theory?

The “CIRA” hold was because of the death of Mr Ed Hew, a Registrar. Sadly not everyone who had their domain there moved out when CIRA notified them about the closure. I had a few there and moved them away. It was always possible to move them away but someone didn’t care enough. May be it was too HARD for them.
