TBR Musings - December 2, 2020 (2.Viewing)

If Siber's TBR software was moved to hardware in Montreal, that could easily be a fatal move, this is a game of milliseconds. Actually, even less than that. To be honest, I'd be absolutely stunned if they were stupid enough to actually do that.

WHC has posted that here and in other places, that the Siber TBR team would be joining them in Montreal and everything would be run out of the main WHC offices. I think the WHC contact here stated they were running into issues getting everything centralized on Montreal, and that had "temporarily" led to poor TBR results.

And yes, when you are dealing with sub-millisecond timings, geography plays a definite part, and this is one big reason why all the West Coast TBR registars (NamesPro, Burmac, Baremetal, Dot-CA, etc.) are also-rans week in and week out. It was also why when POOL was a major TBR player, they used Rebel offices right next to the old CIRA downtown office to house their servers.

it's 100% moral compass, as MyID wins a LOT more than just the top 1-2 domains every week, and those don't usually go for high 4-figures. Remember, we're not just talking about O2 and Leasing, but also stuff like TownSquare and Olympiques.

I wasn't watching Olympiques but TownSquare still went for close to 500. Even most of that low-level stuff went higher than I was willing to pay.

In any case, my moral compass works, I just have to ignore it on occasion. I only have circumstantial evidence anyway and there is really no transparency for any TBR auctions other than Baremetal, AFAIK. So morally speaking, Baremetal should be your only registrar. They are the only one with a transparent auction system, showing you the user names of all the bids in auction.

It will be interesting to see if siber ever recovers from whc.

I stopped using MYID in 2018....that’s all I can really say but there’s no chance I would use them going forward no matter what domain dropped.

To those willing to use them, that’s their own choice. Everyone controls how much to pay for a domain. If you’re OK with that then there isn’t a problem? Maybe.

CIRA can easily force these registrars to be open with their auction systems. CIRA wants no part of it. They have their own problems that get covered up.

Wow, I'd hate to ask what O2, Leasing, Unix, and Evolved went for. LOL
