TBR Musings - January 6, 2021 (1.Viewing)

I just want to let you know [notify]Sally[/notify] that it is confusing that when I decide to pay with
Email money transfer at Sibername, it says to use 55555 (whatever the order id is) as the password. But you have direct deposit enabled so there is nowhere for a password.
I just put the order id...domain and tbr date in the message, but that could use some clarification/updating to avoid confusion.

Hi [notify]Sally[/notify]. Thanks for checking-in and your question.

Below are some of my personal recommendations. Most aren't are all "tool" related but I think these are somewhat simple changes that could make WHC more seamless and/or competitive:

1) Having the option to forward/redirect without paying extra. Redirects are a basic feature/tool that is offered for free at any other registrar I have used (including Sibername);

2) I get a lot of invoices for 0 dollars for the free "domain manager". Not really a problem, but it's a little annoying/unnecessary getting these email invoices for $0 every month, for every domain. Perhaps there's an option to disable these specific emails but I couldn't find it;

3) WHC can't seem to recognize when a domain has been transferred-out. I'm not sure what's going on there but I find this quite strange. Again, not a big problem but it can be a little confusing seeing domains that are no longer there. I also once transferred-out a domain that previously had auto-renew on, and WHC kept sending me renewal invoices even though the domain was no longer at WHC; and

4) It would be great to have the option to renew .CA domains at regular cost at any point during the expiry period. The entire expiry period is 75 days, and registrars like GoDaddy will let me renew my .CAs up until the final day with no additional fees tacked-on (whereas WHC would charge me $79.33 (63.99 + tax)). As such, it's not uncommon for me to wait 2+ months (after the expiry date) before deciding whether to renew a domain at GoDaddy. At WHC, we don't have that option (without paying additional fees), which leads me to drop domains that I might have renewed otherwise.

None of the above is a serious problem for me but I thought I would take the opportunity to point these things out. I'm actually quite happy with WHC but I just need the basics, and the only "tool" I'm really missing is the option to redirect.

I would say look at the domain control panels of Namespro or Uniregistry, those work pretty well for me.

Ability to get an instant auth code on a domain in your account.
free url forwarding
renewal specials or discounts would be nice, even a one day special per year, but you don't see that in many places anymore. which means if you had it it would attract more customers.

If you create some kind of optional domain market and charge a small 5 or 10% broker fee, that would be a way to recoup some revenues and also add another feature. Ability to register and post a domain for sale instantly can be a good service.

Hey all, following this thread.

Can you let us know what tools specifically you believe are required to make WHC a no-brainer for you?

I see bulk domain tools or default DNS settings is a huge one. Is there anything else?

1) There should be no need to "activate" or "signup" every single domain to a service just to perform basic domain tasks.

2) Bulk domain tools, again without the need to activate a free service for each and every domain.

3) No more $0 monthly invoices - those are both unnerving and unnecessary.

4) Free built-in domain forwarding, just like every other registrar.

Hi [notify]Sally[/notify], thanks for posting

My wishlist would essentially be what others have said. WHC should have a domain manager dashboard that is separate and easier than the hosting side of the house. If someone registers a domain and does not host it, they should have to jump through many of the same hoops.

For an easy comparison, just take a look at Sibername's domain manager. Or Namespro's or GoDaddy's...there's lots of examples out there

I agree DR...

It's nice to see that Siber has added back the old TBR "Here's what you Won, and here's what you have at Auction" emails that disappeared for a bit there. Thanks.
