Curious if the $9.99 for transfers is a money loser, a break even, or a small profit for registrars?

As I said I hate the idea of transferring between two registrars every year, but when you have 100's domains and can save over $1 on each, and both registrars are good, then it becomes attractive if it doesn't take too much time. If it's not profitable for the registrars and many customers start doing it, my concern is the quality at the registrars starts going down over time. My preference is just a quality registrar with competitive prices which don't have to be the lowest.
Registrars pay a wholesale cost of $9.50 to CIRA.
 
I think more important than price is trust. I need to have a strong relationship with a registrar as it’s holding all my valuable assets. Not to say that’s not the case with WHC.

I think 9.50 is cost if I remember correctly, saw that somewhere too so I concur with rlm.

That said, registrars have employees to pay too so I don't mind paying a bit over for the good service

Well in this day and age, they say if its free, you are the product.

And no offence to Yaacov, I can appreciate what you're doing, I had considered doing it myself for at least a decade, but was discouraged by CIRA from doing so as a domainer - so apparently attitudes there have changed. But I'm not a fan of turning over my portfolio to another big domainer, he is my competition after all. Do you want to show all of your investing strategy to one of your big competitors?

Call me cynical or paranoid, but it began when I came to the realization many years ago that the former domainer and owner of dnforum could read private messages and negotiations with other domainers. And then later that same guy was bidding against his own customers as VP of Godaddy. So think VERY carefully about who has access to your data/portfolio/etc... They're happy to use your info against you or in their favour.

I have worked with most of the staff and CEO at WHC, I did not make the decision to move there lightly. I do trust them implicitly with my catalog.

If I have an issue at WHC I will pick up the phone and talk to Frank or Emil personally, that gives me great confidence, especially if a domain gets locked for CDRP. I know WHC will stand up for me until the decision is made.

I hope CatchDrop uses the same transparency, I would love to see that because myID is too secretive for my taste.

If you look how WHC engages the community, they are a shining example, just do what they do and you will get it right. It does not have to be at cost, service comes at a price. I don't know who remembers the big WHC crash but instead of hiding it they owned the situation, told us what was going to happen to avoid it and the future and they made it happen. Respect for that company, I have no shares there, I am just a happy customer.
 
right now I'm paying $11.60 before tax for renewals at Namespro on their discount program, so would be 61 cents less per domain at WHC Gold, and a higher saving the first year if I just start transferring in at $9.99 each.

The transfers for my .ca would save me over $1000 this year.

That said, I hate the idea of transferring back and forth between registrars each year for the saving, and would rather just have a reasonable cost registrar that offers good service.

I never would have considered this with Sibername, but it seems WHC is more proactive and becoming more domainer friendly.

We'll see, will have to give it some thought. Over $1000 per year savings is a pretty good start.

I hate the idea of transferring out hundreds of domains every year to a second registrar, then the following year transferring them back to the first registrar, etc.

Plus isn't there a 30 or 60 day lock when you switch registrars? That means tying up a potential domain sale.

Now the difference is about $900. So do I create a lot of work for myself or just considering it a cost of doing business?

Register a domain...get a deal. Transfer a domain in to a new registrar...get a deal. Renew a domain with your existing registrar ...nothing...crickets.
And I find this true with many things today.
My cell phone.... I have never had it with one company for more than 2 years. I primarily use 2 companies and every time it comes up for renewal it goes to another company as even the existing company’s “loyalty” department’s rate is usually out by a lot compared to going to the other one.
I am a semi-retired chef and being in the food business for over 50 years(yes I’m old :eek: :D )where customer retention is really important, I find this business model baffling.

I’m one of those guys that hops from Bell to Rogers as soon as the promotions expire. I do it out of principle. In terms of domains; pricing is important but there are many other factors that many of us consider also.

Yeah it's 9.50/domain plus the 1k/year CIRA fee.

Do you guys plan on competing further with "some" of the newer registrars offering 10.50/domain renewals?

The costs of a registrar are massive. Yes CIRA gets the above but for a domain registrar to make money. It has to come outside of renewals. The majority are successful due to hosting. Once they lock you in with hosting. You are pretty much paying for life.

A lot of the big ones prefer customer rotation over retention.

I switched a wireless carrier recently as well, first time in far too long (20 years?), and should have done it way sooner :)

Cable/telco firms, they'll let you cancel, switch over, and then they'll call you the next day and treat you as a new customer with killer deals. That's why we have that 30 day clause for all contracts where you can cancel and go with another provider.

Only if a person doesn't know anything about hosting or how to move files :)

Otherwise, even the biggest WP sites, take only a few minutes to migrate...

Very well said, my sentiments exactly.

The whole marketing seems to be based on luring customers in at a cheap rate, and expecting them to stay forever at higher rates than you can get elsewhere.

and I'm not talking about any specific company here, just in general and usually to do with domains or monthly tech related services.

Definitely! The transparency, community contributions, and awesome staff and support are definitely a big win for WHC.

Just need awesome bulk tools that can compete with GD :)
