Montreal, QC, January 17, 2022 - Web Hosting Canada has announced the official launch of its .CA domain name backordering platform.

Canadians can now leverage this new tool to register valuable .CA domain names the second they expire and before they become available to the general public through a process called TBR (To Be Released). Some of the domains that drop each week represent a unique opportunity to obtain a high-value domain at a bargain price.

Popular domains that are requested by multiple interested buyers go to a 1-day auction, also managed through the WHC platform. Domain investors often buy low during the auction, then resell to individual buyers with a substantial markup, or “park” popular domains and run ads on them.

“With over 3 million active .CA domain registrations, finding an available Canadian domain name for your business is becoming more challenging,” explains Emil Falcon, WHC’s founder and CEO. Adding ”Before today, .CA domains did not have a single platform that could be used to confidently secure expiring domains. Our new Backordering platform aims to change that.”

What makes WHC’s backorder tool unique is that it “regularly wins more requested domains than other providers, with an average success rate above 70%”, says Frank Michlick, WHC’s Domains Product Manager. “Our .CA backorder system is the most advanced platform of its kind, and thanks to continuous R&D investments and ongoing development of our domain management platform, we have plenty more improvements on the way.”

WHC’s Backordering platform can be used to bid on domains that drop every Wednesday at 2 PM EST. Entry bids start at $20, which includes the cost of a 1-year domain registration. Customers aren’t charged any fees unless they win the domain, so there’s no risk involved in participating in a drop.

For those who are already placing their backorders via Sibername, please note that the WHC & Sibername systems are connected. So don't place your backorders on both and bid against yourself ;-)

On that note, is the auction bidding going to take place concurrently on both Siber and WHC (at least until it's merged)?

Wow everything looks amazing, I'm impressed

Well almost everything, I'm not sure about the graphic with the enormous hands :D

Yes, it is on both systems concurrently. WHC has a backorder deadline at 13:45 though (before the drop).

One other question:

Will ordering a TBR domain on WHC, with you place a temp credit hold on your VISA/MC?

I got into trouble like that with FastWebServer and placed a ton of orders without knowing their policy, thus inadvertently creating over $1K in 3-day credit holds.

Going forward that can be the case, but it would only be for the amount of the initial bid placed and for new customers.

I've had that happen someplace else before myself.

So if I, as an existing customer, place a few bids on the new WHC system would I currently get a credit hold in the bid amounts?

I use a specific CC with a small limit for all online purchases (to limit liability and fraud) so I have to be really careful laying a ton of 3-day credit holds on it.

I love how Siber does it, you order and then you pay off your winnings - no need to enter your CC info in for each and every TBR order you place, like on WHC.

I've also got to say I am not liking that sortable list of active TBR bids on WHC, and it means that everything we order is totally transparent to anyone who wants to look and create a bid list based entirely on our orders.

I guess the only solution is to mass-bid at the last-minute, but not everyone will do that.

It will not.

You should not need to re-enter your credit card information, if you have a saved card on your account, it would offer it to you to use that at the time of the order, but you might have to re-verify the CV2 code.

Thank you for the feedback.

What I mean is that every individual TBR order is treated as a standard registration order, with credit card, choosing .CA status, etc., each and every time you place one. I realize why, but it's still a bit of a kludge.

The Siber system is much better, where you can place orders with 1-click and then just pay for what you win.

Remember, there is a reason why Siber was a leader in the TBR space and WHC decided to buy them - it would be a shame to lose everything good about their system and processes.

At first look this new system is like TBR going mainstream in user appeal.

Before with TBR you almost had to be a domainer to know where to go to bid, and dig down in a site to get to the TBR area. This interface seems more appealing and geared to new users.

I'd expect competition to increase, maybe this new system is more targeted to someone going after a specific name if you have to get a credit card hold for every domain bid.

I haven't logged in to check it out, if it's the same as Sibername I'll just keep using Siber, and hope my domains end up there for now.

OK, I just want to make sure its clear, to me and everyone else. So if I were to summarize the scenario:

Both systems share the _same_ set of TBR connections, and it does not matter which system bidders use, the key is to not use BOTH systems lest you want to bid against yourself. There is no risk of placing an order at Sibername only to find out the domain is in auction on WHC (or vice versa) and then be shut out of the auction. Domains will be auctioned in a single event, with bids coming simultaneously from both WHC and Sibername users using the respective interfaces. Bids on WHC will be seen by bidders on Sibername and vice versa. Both systems will share a common set of rules. Bottom line, there is no need to switch from using Sibername to WHC unless you want to.

[notify]FM[/notify], are all of these statements correct??

Thanks!
Rob

This is correct, Rob. I should add that the goal is to retire the Sibername order part at one point, in order to be complete.

Don't retire it before auctioning the domain name.

I'll start the bid at 1k for sibername.com

We're not planning to sell this domain name any time soon, especially not at this starting bid, lol. The name will most likely redirect to WHC after the full integration is complete.

I like the domain name search feature, automatically loads results, will save people some time.

So goodbye to Sibername and Uniregistry both in 2022!
