Did you time that post [notify]Esdiel[/notify] ?

Not sure what you mean. I "bought" those above 3-4 years ago.

One problem is that CIRA doesn't release domains that no longer have a current and real reason for being restricted. I know of many that have no geographic restrictions, and with no provincial extensions registered, but were still "reserved" for no apparent reason. I've asked multiple times over the years and answers from CIRA were always a very vague response that "we periodically release domains" that no longer should be reserved - but I've never seen that actually happen.

My theory is that maybe CIRA finally decided to actually release the domains that should be released - but screwed up and released everything accidentally.

As for the registrants that were able to register these domains, hopefully they are understanding that mistakes happen and will have no problem with the domains legitimately reserved are being taken back.

On the flip side, I hope CIRA takes back the domains that have a legit reason to be reserved, but lets them keep the domains that have no legit reason to be reserved.

I also hope that CIRA carefully reviews each domain before taking them back - and fully informs the registrant as to what technical glitch happened, and specifically what the reason that particular domain is reserved for.

I trust that CIRA will be fair about it. I also hope that CIRA creates, publishes and sticks to an actual policy about releasing domains that no longer need to be reserved.

Full disclosure, I may have registered one or more of these domains myself. But when you see a great domain is freely registerable, you just do it.

I have a few sitting in my check-out cart at the moment but I won't bother I guess lol.

Well my advice is to register them before someone else does. What if they are not restricted? How do you know? Unless its obviously a restricted domain, you wont until maybe its too late.

Well I do know because i had previously done research on them already...but then you made me reconsider... but now all three are restricted again already. Richard moves pretty fast apparently.

Great to know. But my advice still stands for future reference. Kinda like that auction fiasco before, when given an opportunity to bid or buy a domain, you do it. If not, you lose all right to claim if you don't act on it when you can. I'd rather lose it due to a legit mistake after the dust settles rather than to lose it because I did nothing. You always have to assume that everyone else has the same and equal opportunity.

Oh i totally agree, that's why I bought all those LLs a few years back.

I see some nice logos on GB.ca, CJ.ca AY.ca and Meta.ca

VS.ca, FD.ca UC.ca, and TK.ca are inactive.

I had offered a large sum for Meta from the group it is reserved for. They were considering it until I suspect they caught wind of the Facebook rebrand. I'm guessing its going to take a 7-figure offer now.

From [notify]richard.schreier[/notify]

Hello,

On May 30th of this year, an error was made in the registry which removed the block tag that served to prevent domain names that are registered at a 3rd level (i.e. example.on.ca) from being registered at the 2nd level (example.ca). This is a CIRA policy that has been in place for many years. As a result of the block being inadvertently removed, a number of domains were registered that should have been blocked. These registrations are invalid and are being reversed.
In your case, there was 1 domain registered (See attached)

These registrations will be reversed on Wednesday, June 15 at approximately 0900 eastern time. You will receive a full credit on your account.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you in advance for your cooperation. We will also inform your registrars as well to ensure messaging is consistent.

Regards
Richard

I just want to confirm, the domains that Cira are recalling from the drop are only domains that should NOT have been released ie .on.ca type domains, not the ones like Carlson.ca lol?

Exactly why they actually haven’t figured it out…very sad. Again, those with the domains should not be punished. Why are those domains even restricted? No one can really answer the question. Not even CIRA.

I’m sure they’ll revoke Carlson too.

And will it go back into the Vault or will they release it via the TBR? As I discussed with them there is no reason to restrict that domain and they agreed and said it would drop but would not say when.

Great question. I'll defer to comment since I can't really do so without getting a tad bit snarky over CIRA's policy and communications (or lack thereof) on this matter.

However, I've been led to believe that the latest blocked names fiasco has at least put "the vault" problem on their radar. So I guess we can declare that a minor victory.

Our friend and CIRA inside-man [notify]richard.schreier[/notify] may be able to comment further.

And may I add how much we appreciate having Richard as a member here *THUMBSUP*

No doubt. We’d really be in the dark without him.

Update: Today at around 0900 eastern, domains that were registered in error will be retracted. The block list has already been reinstated so all of these names will not be subsequently available for registration. This will complete the required action for the domains registered in error. Registrants should expect refunds/credits from their registrars accordingly, all of whom have been informed of the action being taken.

On the second topic of "the vault", we will be conducting additional analysis to determine if there are names in the block list that need not be there any longer (the 3rd level domains(s) no longer exist). Our practice is to make the corresponding 2nd level domain available through the TBR process which provides advance notice for potential registrants and an equal opportunity for all registrars to acquire the name(s) on a first come first serve basis. Eventually, we hope to make the process automatic whenever a 3rd level string is cleared.

That will be the plan with any names that fall into that category. Depending on the volume, we may release the names a portion at a time but be sure I will personally post here at DN.ca when names are being added to the TBR for your advance notice and consideration.

Thanks for everyone's patience.
